It all started when...
In 2010, two students at the University of Toledo walked in to a classroom. But there was no class. It was a Saturday morning. It was a meeting for a student group working on sustainability projects for the state of Ohio.
Tony Bova and Jeff Beegle met in this group, working on a bioenergy project to reduce nutrient runoff on farms in the Maumee Watershed. Tony and Jeff quickly became friends and later co-founded a Student Green Fund at the University of Toledo.
But all good things must come to an end. In 2013, Tony graduated. He went to the University of Tennessee to begin his Energy Science & Engineering PhD through the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Education. Fortunately, Jeff graduated in the following year and was accepted to the University of Tennessee too.
From 2014-2015, Jeff and Tony took classes for their graduate programs but also pursued business and technology commercialization classes. Starting a company was something they both wanted to do.
In the winter of 2015, Tony called Jeff and said, "Hey, we should start a company. What do you think?" Jeff said, "That sounds great, let's do it." Tony replied and said, "Great because I also registered it online!"
And Grow Bioplastics was born! Over the last two years, Tony and Jeff have participated in pitch competitions around the world, raising enough capital to get the company off the ground. Now, they are focused on getting their first products out to market.
